It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of Calexico energies, virtually a rebirth. This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by Calexico. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Calexico on ‘El Picador’. If you love Calexico as much as I do, then Calexico Hot Rail is the CD for you!
Ballad Of Cable Hogue is the funkiest number on the album. Ritual Road Map - This is a very lively song. Fade can be hardly overrated by any means; this is what Calexico is all about. Calexico rocks harder than ever with Crystal Frontier. Untitled III is a great opener for Hot Rail. Sonic Wind is kind of track that compels you to skip back and drink it in one more time before moving on through Hot Rail. No Calexico song has come close to capturing my attention as Muleta did. The sound in Mid Town is really warm and Calexico’s signature voice is still very much present. Strong, powerful vocals of Calexico in Service and Repair are very impressive. Untitled II is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. After few listenings I started to like Drenched more and more. 16 Track Scratch is the more seemingly obscure song on Hot Rail that bear up best to repeated listening. Tres Avisos has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Calexico’s strong vocals come to the fore. Hot Rail is a medium tempo tune.
