After seeing Speechless, I had to have a good Laurie Anderson cd. It has been two years Laurie Anderson’ last studio CD, “Bright Red/Tightrope” which won Array Academy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. On Bright Red/Tightrope album, Laurie Anderson have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Speechless and Bright Red is really good.
Bright Red is the excellent blend of moody yet optimistic tunes. The Puppet Motel as a highlight of Bright Red/Tightrope contains a ton of gorgeous melodies. Still going through Bright Red/Tightrope and coming to appreciate Speak My Language more and more with every listen. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with World Without End. This is one of those songs that musicians strive to write and create. If you are a Laurie Anderson fan, you will love Muddy River. This song may be the most meaningful. The opening track Love Among the Sailors is very much like you would expect from other albums. In Poisons it becomes nowhere more obvious that Laurie Anderson has yet to define own style. In Our Sleep is probably one of Laurie Anderson’s biggest successes for the album - it’s lovely to listen to. Strong, powerful vocals of Laurie Anderson in Night in Baghdad are very impressive. After you’ve listened to Tightrope, most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Music of Same Time Tomorrow is gentle, never overbearing.
