Lead single “Progeny” and “Wheat” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Since completing 2000’s ‘Progeny’, Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard fulfilled their contract with ForeFront Records and where under no obligation to release another album. ‘Gladiator’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. Progeny and Wheat is really good.
Wheat is the funkiest number on the album. Voice and instruments in Battle complement each other. Earth is a marvelous song and it grows on you. Best song on the album, love it. The opening track To Zucchabar is very much like you would expect from other albums. Patricide is a song that definitely grows on you and becomes an album favorite. Emperor is Dead is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. It’s a great pleasure to listen to Might of Rome from the beginning to the end. Strength and Honor has a fun tempo. Strong, powerful vocals of Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard in Reunion are very impressive. Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard is one of artists that allow his songs like Slaves to Rome to stand on their own and be heard. Music and lyrics of Barbarian Horde creates, for me, fertile ground for daydreaming. Am I Not Merciful? is the more seemingly obscure song on Gladiator that bear up best to repeated listening. I was truly moved when I heard Elysium. I think Honor Him is the best song Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard has ever done. Now We Are Free is really the reason why I recommend buying Gladiator.
