Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Various Artists on ‘I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me (Billie Holiday)’. On Lady Day: The Best Of [CD 2] album, Various Artists have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Since Various Artists last CD (Lady Day: The Best Of [CD 2]) on Mute Records back in 2001, I have felt a massive void in my life. I love this album so much, i’ve been crazy about Various Artists ever.

The Very Thought Of You (Billie Holiday) - Various Artists first major hit. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: I Can’t Get Started (Billie Holiday), which shows, blatantly, how much Various Artists has evolved as a singer. Long Gone Blues (Billie Holiday) is outstanding work of Various Artists. Sugar (Billie Holiday) hits the heart. Vocals of Various Artists in Some Other Spring (Billie Holiday) really capture me and are set perfectly to the rhythm. Simply the finest work ever from this multi-talented singer. This song has very few things relative to that of it’s predecessor. Body And Soul (Billie Holiday) one of the best in my collection. Some of the arrangements found on Lady Day: The Best Of [CD 2] are surprisingly edgy. This track is clearly meant to showcase Various Artists’s vocal abilities. So much energy, so exciting a sound.God Bless The Child (Billie Holiday) is one of the best records ever. This is probably my favorite song on the album. I’ve found myself listening to I Cover The Waterfront (Billie Holiday) back to back and back many times. Gloomy Sunday (Billie Holiday) is simple, dignified and effective, Various Artists refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. This is the kind of song I think of when I think of Various Artists. |titile| is a sure sign of something most of us are experiencing, maturity.
