Stanley Donwood has compared writing for Various Artists’s new album to that on ‘DJ LonLI - Karmic Gates’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of Various Artists energies, virtually a rebirth. Since completing 2003’s ‘Nitin Sawhney / Acguired dreams (Theme from Shiva Manas Puja)’, Various Artists fulfilled their contract with Savoy Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Oh yes, this album gets Array out of Array
Mukund Madhav / Raag Bhairavi (O.F.B. Mix) is probably one of Various Artists’s biggest successes for the album - it’s lovely to listen to. Musafir / Barnawa (F.C. Kahuna Mix) is the albums biggest surprise. U. Srinivas / Sree Maha Ganapathe (J. Padilla Mix) is one of the best records ever. Some of the arrangements found on DJ LonLI - Karmic Gates are surprisingly edgy. Abhijit Pohankar / Piya Bayari is a very catchy tune. Ustad Sultan Khan / Raag Des (Dreamshild Mix) is marvelous and different song. Hooverphonic / Jackies Delirium make listening to Various Artists like being in some sort of time warp. Thumak Chalat / Raag Pahadi (F.L.C. Mix) - My least favorite song on this album. After about the third Nawang Khechog / Wonting Peace listen through, I began to believe this song is Various Artists’s essence. Lux / Secret Fish (Rajastan Mix) is the best music that I have heard from anyone in any area of music. Pt.C.R. Vyas / Raag Chhayanat (S. Fernandez Mix) is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. The song feels complete.
