It’s natural for Various Artists to take a stab at ‘Abdel Ali Slimani / Moi Et Toi’ considering her long-professed love for Gridlok. While no new Various Artists album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 2001 tour in Europe. ‘Arabic Groove’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. Lots of variety between tracks. My favorite is Abdy / Galbi
I find myself hearing bits of Abdy / Galbi here and there throughout my waking hours. Dania / Leylei (Transglobal Underground Remix) defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. I was truly moved when I heard Amr Diab / Amarain. Hisham Abbas / Intil Waheeda has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Various Artists’s strong vocals come to the fore. |titile| is the kind of record that makes you remember why music can be so addictive. What sets Fadela & Sahraoui / Mani apart is Various Artists’s innovative and organic way of creating atmospheres. Natasha Atlas / Kidda is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. The sound in Khaled / Mauvais Sang is really warm and Various Artists’s signature voice is still very much present. Sawt El Atlas / Ne Me Jugez Pas (Volodia Remix) is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. Cheb Tarik / L’histoire as a highlight of Arabic Groove contains a ton of amazing melodies.
