three years ago, Taj Mahal briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Corinna”. This is the first studio album from Taj Mahal since bad diagnosis in 2000. Taj Mahal’s debut, ‘The Natch’l Blues’, does not fit easily into one genre. Smart music for smart people.
It’s such an underrated song. Voice of Taj Mahal in I ain’t gonna let nobody steal my jellyroll is honest and guitar work is subtle and poignant. Song Going up to the country, paint my mailbox blue is actually a funny song. Done changed my way of living - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem. She caught the katy and left me a mule to ride is the more seemingly obscure song on The Natch’l Blues that bear up best to repeated listening. The cuckoo has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Taj Mahal’s strong vocals come to the fore. You don’t miss your water (’Til your well runs dry) is the most memorable and cool. Ain’t that a lot of love is another strong production from Taj Mahal.
