While no new Carmen Miranda album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 2001 tour in Asia. It has been eight years Carmen Miranda’ last studio CD, “The Ultimate Collection: 26 Original Recordings” which won Array Grammy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. The Ultimate Collection: 26 Original Recordings isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. I Yi, Yi, Yi, Yi (I Like You Very Much) (02 15) and Cuanto Le Gusta (03 05) is really good.
I can’t stop humming along Cuanto Le Gusta (03 05). The opening track Mama Yo Quiero (I Want My Mama) (02 40) is very much like you would expect from other albums. South American Way (02 52) is possibly the best song Carmen Miranda has come up. I believe Bambu Bambu (02 33) is one of the most perfect, heartfelt songs ever written. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in The Ultimate Collection: 26 Original Recordings. Touradas Em Madrid (02 39) is the first taste of the new album. A Weekend In Havana (03 09) to me is the best you can get from Carmen Miranda. If you are a Carmen Miranda fan, you will love The Man With The Lolipop Song (02 21). The Wedding Samba (03 04) marked the continuation of Carmen Miranda in style evolution. Ca Room’ Pa Pa (03 07) - This is a very lively song. O Passo Du Kanguru (03 00) - A strong beat. I See, I See (02 48) is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. I came to like Manuelo (03 08). Co, Co, Co, Co, Co, Ro (02 44) is a marvelous sing-along. This track, in particular, has the kind of undeniably catchy flavor. Within the first few notes of Rebola A Bola (02 14) it’s perfectly clear that Carmen Miranda is living this song. Nao Te Dou A Chupeta (02 20) is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. Best song on the album, love it. Na Baixa Do Sapateiro (03 09) (3:10) Not one of my favorites, but for a lot of people this is one of their best songs. I like Na Batucada Da Vida (03 36) because it’s extremely catchy and has awesome drumming. Some of the arrangements found on The Ultimate Collection: 26 Original Recordings are surprisingly edgy. Bamboleo (02 34) - isn’t quite as powerful vocally, but has a beautiful melody.
