This is the first studio album from Nor Elle since bad diagnosis in 2001. This fifteen-song debut EP shows the promise that Nor Elle has. While no new Nor Elle album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 2001 tour in North America. I greatly enjoyed this CD.
Episode 1 is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. On The Roof is probably the most interesting track on Slapstick. Nor Elle is one of artists that allow his songs like Sunset Print to stand on their own and be heard. Lyrics of Before You Leave are precise and evocative. When I listen to At Close Quarters in my car when traffic ain’t going so good. Key To The City is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track Nor Elle ever produced. The beautiful sound of this track makes you want to close your eyes and sway away with the music. Dubsolution is one of the more up-tempo songs on Slapstick. What sets Episode 2 apart is Nor Elle’s innovative and organic way of creating atmospheres. I was truly moved when I heard Digital Diary. Lost Memories is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. As always, Nor Elle’s lyrics are worth listening to again and again. The song feels complete.
