John Digester has compared writing for Kurt Elling’s new album to that on ‘Live in Chicago’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. Now signed to Kurt Elling’s Savoy Records, the title track from second album “Live in Chicago” leads Kurt Elling’s back-to-school campaign. This is one of the best Cd’s Kurt Elling has dropped to date. I wish that “Live in Chicago” album was instrumental.
It’s such an underrated song. I have all of Kurt Elling’s tracks and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is probably the most his introspective effort. Oh My God is a striking and quite long song. The song feels complete. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Live in Chicago is (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons. Intro: (Esperanto) - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem. This song is very powerful, its catchy melody will have you singing along in no time. Don’t Get Scared is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. I like to sing along with Intro: (Goin’ To Chicago), though I mess up the lyrics sometimes. Goin’ To Chicago which is my favorite is a truly Kurt Elling sounding song. Intro: (The Rent Party) makes a person feel astounding. The Rent Party is the album’s biggest hit, I think. In Blues Chaser the music gets its power.
