On Filworks Xiii: Invitation to a Suicide album, John Zorn have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of John Zorn energies, virtually a rebirth. This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by John Zorn. I wish that “Filworks Xiii: Invitation to a Suicide” album was instrumental.
One listen to the sheer beauty of Suicide Waltz was all I needed. One of the songs that always stick in my mind is Shifting Sands because the melody in the chorus is so good. East Greenpoint Rundown - isn’t quite as powerful vocally, but has a beautiful melody. Time Twist is another strong production from John Zorn. Within the first few notes of The Suicide Kid it’s perfectly clear that John Zorn is living this song. Billet Doux is the song that really did it for me. Suicide Blues Pt. 1 is a bit different from John Zorn stereotypical stuff. Simple and heartfelt closing track Trance Dance closes Filworks Xiii: Invitation to a Suicide on a high note. Lonely Are The Dumb is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything John Zorn released so far. Moon Moods is, without a doubt, my favorite song, ever. Bugsy’s Jazztet as well as many of songs is a short story in miniature. This track makes my mind whirl and vibrate with flowing energy. Roary’s Waltz presents the perfect mix of instruments on Filworks Xiii: Invitation to a Suicide. Getting Suicidal is one of the most beautiful songs ever to grace my stereo. The opening track Final Retribution is very much like you would expect from other albums. This is one of those songs that musicians strive to write and create. Unjust Reward sets the tone for the entire album.
