Self-described as Easy Listening with lots of words, John Zorn comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. Stanley Donwood has compared writing for John Zorn’s new album to that on ‘Filmworks: 1986-1990′ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. There is no doubt that John Zorn has talent. Smart music for smart people.
I’ve found myself listening to Homecoming {From White and Lazy} back to back and back many times. Heist {From White and Lazy} - John Zorn first major hit. Meat Dream {From White and Lazy} - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. Phone Call {From White and Lazy} (0:52) - Oh, this is one of my favorites! End Title {From White and Lazy} sets the tone for the entire album. Golden Boat Fanfare is one of my favorite songs by John Zorn. I like the agression and power of Theme {From the Golden Boat}. This is the kind of song I think of when I think of John Zorn. A great put together song. Mexico {From the Golden Boat} - To me, this is the best song on the Filmworks: 1986-1990. Mood {From the Golden Boat} actually sounds so joyous, that you can practically see a smile on John Zorn’s face. Overall a nice softer song. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. Golden Boat [Turntable Mix] {From the Golden Boat} [Turntable Mix] is a gorgeous song and it grows on you. End Titles {From the Golden Boat} has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. The opening track Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is very much like you would expect from other albums. She Must Be Seeing Things (Main Title) without a doubt is the standout song of Filmworks: 1986-1990. Swirling Shot {From She Must Be Seeing Things} is the most memorable and cool. Homecoming {From She Must Be Seeing Things} is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. Catalina Flash {From She Must Be Seeing Things} is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track John Zorn ever produced. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: Seduction {From She Must Be Seeing Things}, which shows, blatantly, how much John Zorn has evolved as a singer. Sex Shop Boogaloo {From She Must Be Seeing Things} which is my favorite is a truly John Zorn sounding song. Catalina Escapes {From She Must Be Seeing Things} as a highlight of Filmworks: 1986-1990 contains a ton of amazing melodies. Worms {From She Must Be Seeing Things} very upbeat. It’s so catchy, it’s amazing. Following Sequence {From She Must Be Seeing Things} is pretty funky and mellow. There is excellent mix of music in Movie Set {From She Must Be Seeing Things}. This is one of those songs that musicians strive to write and create. It’s such an underrated song. End Titles {From She Must Be Seeing Things} - This one has a powerful beat and a good melody.
